In an industry whose hallmark is big-breasted, blue-eyed California blondes, Raquel Darrian stood out from the crowd.
A shapely brunette with gray eyes, the Kansas-born Darrian, one of the first Vivid Girls, not to mention one of the most beautiful women ever to fuck on camera, exuded sexuality in every scene she did. Darrian was selective about the projects she worked on (in her decade in the business, she appeared in a relatively modest 90 or so titles) choosing to work primarily on big-budget productions. She enjoyed producing quality, and her fans appreciated her for it.
Born on July 21, 1968, Darrian moved to California as a young girl and got her start in nude modeling before making the jump to hardcore, doing layouts for such popular men's magazines as Penthouse (under her real name).
"She was an immaculate beauty," says industry veteran Bill Margold. "She looked almost too good to be true. She was an extremely attractive woman with a perfect little body - the perfect definition of the perfect Vivid Girl."
With her killer body (36C-24-32) and stunning looks (she's part Irish, part Italian, part Native American), she and then-boyfriend Derrick Lane (who she later married) entered the business together in 1989 and worked primarily with each other for three years, until Darrian signed an exclusive contract with Vivid Entertainment Group.
"She was beautiful, sexual and had a unique quality that we look for when signing a girl," recalls Vivid owner Steve Hirsch. "She seemed to connect with her audience in a way that kept them wanting more."
In her decade in the business, Darrian appeared in a relatively few 100 tapes including Rolling Thunder, Luna Chick, Original Sin, Raquel In The Wild, Girlfriend, Torrid Tales, Cinderella 2: The Stepsister and Bonnie and Clyde, which won Best Box Cover Concept at the 1992 AVN Awards. Hirsch cites it as Darrian's hottest performance on tape.
"Her on-screen performances were limited because she was limited to Derrick Lane for the majority of her career, and for me there's nothing punitive about that, but I think if you're going to be a real star in this business you've got to play against different pitchers," Margold says. "We would have liked to have seen some of the male legends get into her, so to speak. I could not live vicariously through Derrick Lane, and I'm not sure many other men could either."
In June 1997, she gave birth to a daughter and left the industry two years later.
"She felt that she had accomplished all that she could in this industry," Hirsch says, but adds that he would welcome her back to Vivid any time. "We loved having her as a Vivid Girl."
"She was to her generation what Annette Haven was to the generation that preceded her," Margold notes. "And that was that almost untouchable quality that her fans wanted. The ivory tower look, the 11 in a world of 10s."
